Non-Flash Knovio Web Recording is HERE!

We’re excited to announce the upcoming general availability of our new WebRTC Recording capability on Monday, June 24, 2019. With this update, you will no longer need Adobe Flash (or any other plugin) to record video and audio from your webcam or microphone in Knovio.

IMPORTANT: This update may require your IT department to update your corporate firewall configuration by Monday, June 24, 2019 to ensure uninterrupted access to Knovio. See below for more information.

What is changing?

The update to WebRTC recording will not change any of the workflows or features you’ve become accustomed to in Knovio. The user interface for recording voiceover and video narration for your PowerPoint slides has not changed at all. However, we expect this update will dramatically simplify your browser setup, resolve issues that previously affected previewing and publishing, and offer better overall system performance while recording.

Why are we making this change?

In July 2017, Adobe announced that it planned to end-of-life the Flash Player plugin by the end of 2020, and over the past several years most major browsers have either blocked it by default or severely limited access to it. Over the same period, our team has been steadily removing Flash-based components from our application and replacing them with modern HTML5. The move to WebRTC for our webcam and microphone recording capability marks the last piece of web-based functionality in Knovio to be migrated away from Flash.

What is WebRTC?

WebRTC is a new open-source standard that allows audio and video communication to work inside web pages. Although originally designed to support peer-to-peer communication such as VoIP telephony and video conferencing, it has since been adapted for a much wider range of media applications. Knovio uses WebRTC to stream video and audio feeds from your webcam and microphone to our servers, where they are recorded so that they can be published and shared.

Which browsers are supported?

For the best experience, we recommend using the latest version of Google Chrome for WebRTC recording. Firefox and Safari are also supported.

Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11 are not currently supported due to their lack of full support for WebRTC. These browsers will automatically fall back to using our legacy Flash-based recording system.

For more details, please see our updated System Requirements.

Will my IT department need to update our firewall configuration?

We have designed our new system to work out-of-the-box for most organizations, without any changes needed to your firewall configuration.

However, we highly recommend that your IT department open a very limited range of ports in the firewall to ensure a more stable and reliable connection to our servers, which will result in a better user experience and higher quality recordings.

Please point your IT department to our updated Whitelist Site Requirements, specifically the section titled WebRTC Recording Configuration. If your IT team has any questions about the recommended configuration, please reach out to our Support team and we’ll be happy to assist them.
